Last couple of years we have been actively working with prisoners in Bulgaria . The purpose of these art projects is, through observation of the creative process between convicts and artists, to reassert art as a universal means for self-expression and communication and one that has the potential to trigger individual change.
The people behind bars are not there by chance. They have committed a crime for which they have been convicted. The more serious the crime, the longer they will be inside. Period. There is nothing to be done with them. Society has so many more painful problems that need our attention, our compassion, our help. How can you deal with criminals when there is even one starving old lady, one abandoned child, one homeless person?
With the texts and photos in this book, with the stories of our encounters in prison, we would like to answer these questions. These are the questions we asked ourselves when we first stepped behind bars. They are questions that any normal person would ask. They are not frightening, they are necessary if we are to get to the answers. Each to his own, each according to the way he sees the world, the way he was brought up to see life. Of course, there is no clear and definitive answer that will dispel the skepticism of many when it comes to our work with prisoners.
